NBA announces 12 officials who will work Warriors-Celtics finals

The NBA announced a pool of 12 officials Wednesday who will work the finals series between the Warriors and Celtics.

The officials were selected by the NBA Referee Operations management team based off of their performance during the first three rounds of the playoffs.

“Just as the goal of our players is to reach the postseason finale, the same is true of our officials,” NBA president of league operations Byron Spruell said in a press release. “We appreciate this group’s outstanding work during the playoffs and congratulate them on being selected to officiate in the NBA Finals.”

The officials are Tony Brothers (11th Finals), James Capers (11th Finals), Marc Davis (11th Finals), Kane Fitzgerald (4th Finals), Scott Foster (15th Finals), John Goble (6th Finals), David Guthrie (5th Finals) ), Courtney Kirkland (2nd Finals), Eric Lewis (4th Finals), Josh Tiven (3rd Finals), James Williams (2nd Finals) and Zach Zarba (9th Finals).

The crews for each game are not yet known as the league will announce assignments at 6 am PT on game days.

Foster was the crew chief for Game 5 of the NBA Western Conference finals between the Warriors and Mavericks when Golden State clinched its sixth NBA Finals berth in the last eight season. He’s also the most experienced official working this year’s Finals as he has refed 22 previous Finals games.

Fitzgerald was the official in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals when Warriors star Draymond Green was ejected for committing a Flagrant 2 foul against Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke. Fitzgerald explained the Flagrant 2 call to a pool reporter, saying the contact Green made when fouling Clarke was both unnecessary and excessive.

“The first part was the wind-up and significant contact to the face, and then the pull down from the jersey grab and throw down to the floor to an airborne vulnerable player makes that unnecessary and excessive,” Fitzgerald said.
