LaMonte Wade forced back to IL with lingering knee issue

SAN FRANCISCO — The knee injury that cost LaMonte Wade Jr. the first 25 games of this season will force him to miss more time after the Giants placed him back on the 10-day injured list before Friday’s series opener with the San Diego Padres.

Wade (left knee inflammation) felt the discomfort in his knee flare up while running the bases Monday in Colorado, playing in his 10th game since returning from the same injury in his left knee. He received an MRI, prompting his return to the injured list, and will see a specialist for a follow-up appointment on Monday.

Wade, who had drawn five walks and was batting .240/.375/.360, called the development “frustrating.”

“I feel for LaMonte,” manager Gabe Kapler said. “He’s worked so hard to get back and was off to a good start. He was swinging the bat really well (and) seeing the ball really well. It’s tough when your body’s no cooperating with you.”

Following the MRI, Kapler said “it was pretty clear we needed to put him on the IL.”

The Giants will know more about the length of Wade’s expected absence after his follow-up appointment on Monday.

In the meantime, the Giants replaced Wade on the roster with a player Kapler said was “very difficult” to send out last week. Luis González was back in San Francisco Friday night, just five days since being optioned to Triple-A Sacramento.

González was batting .349 in 21 games since being called up but was bumped from the roster to make space for Tommy La Stella’s return from the injured list.

“Now we have Luis back,” Kapler said. “Whenever there’s some bad news like LaMonte needing to go on the IL, there’s also some good news and that good news was we have Luis González back. It was exciting to be able to say he’s in the lineup today. …

“It’s a great opportunity to talk about how meaningful Luis González has been to our team this year. As everybody knows, we had kind of a tough discussion in sending him down. Part of the reason was because LaMonte was healthy, and LaMonte is also such an important piece of our ball club.”
