A California Highway Patrol officer suffered major injuries and continued to recover in a hospital Wednesday morning following a suspected DUI crash involving another driver Tuesday, the agency said.
Officers arrested a 21-year-old Vacaville man on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and hit-and-run following the wreck on Interstate 80 in Berkeley, the CHP said in a statement released from spokesman Officer David Arias. The suspect was not injured in the crash.
Two CHP officers were assisting a disabled vehicle at about 12:45 am in the eastbound direction just west of University Avenue when a Dodge Ram traveling in the far right lane sideswiped a patrol vehicle, the agency said. The driver of the Ram hit an officer who was outside the vehicle, the CHP said.
A second officer inside the patrol vehicle was not injured.
The Dodge left the scene but officers later found it on the right shoulder of I-80 at the Pinole Valley Road exit. Officers found the driver asleep in the driver’s seat and arrested him, the CHP said.
The crash remains under investigation, and the CHP urged anyone with information to contact them at 510-457-2875.
