California population change, by county

California’s population declined in 2021 for the second consecutive year, new figures from the state show.

Estimates released Monday by the California Department of Finance show that the state’s population dropped from 39,303,157 on Jan. 1, 2021, to 39,185,605 on Jan. 2, 2022 — a decrease of 0.3%. The map above shows the change by county. Figures do not include residents on federal military installations and group quarters residents in state mental institutions, state and federal correctional institutions and veteran homes.
